This is a message especially for Dan Braniff, Bob Lesperance, the groups they worked with, CARP head office,
and all the reps/chapters who supported the campaign to have pension splitting come about in Canada.

Our message while this work was taking place was always that pension splitting would be a fair change of policy
from which many Canadian seniors would benefit. Now that the policy has come about, we are seeing the results at the
grass roots level. As an example, we haven't been reticent about our own situation. Our tax preparer did the returns
both ways. Without pension splitting, as a couple we would have received a refund of $1300. With pension splitting,
our refund will be just over $4400. It emphasizes the fact that retired couples have been unjustly taxed for many years-
we won't dwell on that. Instead, we'll work to make sure all seniors take advantage of these changes this year and in years to come.

Sincere thanks to all those whose efforts have made a significant difference. = Wayne H.

An Incident in United States recently

"ex-cerpt" Orange County TN = Published: April 10, 2008

Orange County’s Project Lifesaver was put to work Sunday morning, when an 80-year-old Alzheimer’s patient was
reported missing in Gordonsville. This was the first opportunity to utilize the equipment, consisting of radio signal
emitting bracelets and trackers. The 40-degree temperatures and intermittent rain were immediate causes for concern, and
the search began outdoors.

Orange County communications supervisor Theresa Burruss received the call at 8:19 a.m. Officer Strong was the first
on the scene with search equipment at 8:23 a.m. Anderson arrived next. Strong said the radio signal, emitted by the Project
Lifesaver bracelet, indicated the patient was inside the two-story, multi-apartment building. The other team members
arrived and the search moved inside, where the signal showed the man on the second floor.

The man was found, lying on a bed in an empty locked apartment (not his), approximately 500 yards from where he was
last seen, and was not in distress. "Officer Strong did a great job. He was on the scene in less than five minutes and
showed us how well this system can work," said Anderson. Anderson is proud of the dedication of the entire team and was
impressed with the team’s speed of deployment and level of communication. Anderson is also proud of the Project Lifesaver
equipment. Project Lifesaver is administered locally by the Orange County Sheriff’s Office and TRIAD.

Visualizing the weather.

In many parts of the country, predicting the weather isn't so simple. Your weather may
change day-to-day, or even hourly. So, you need to stay on top of the weather. Who wants to
get soaked? Fortunately, the Web has no shortage of weather sites.

But WeatherBonk brings a new dimension to weather sites. It lets you view weather reports
from a variety of sources. The reports are accompanied by a map. You can see how temperatures
differ across your city or in nearby areas. Maybe you need help visualizing the weather.
WeatherBonk will help with that, too. You can view live Webcams on the same page! WEATHER

Do you have eagle eyes?

Small changes in photographs can be difficult to see. Unless you really study a photograph,
you may miss them. Of course, spotting differences in pictures is a popular child's game. And it
is a good way to teach children to be attentive to life's details.

With that in mind, check out Eagle Eyes. It's a game developed by Audubon and the Cornell Lab
of Ornithology. You're presented with five groups of two photographs. You have to spot five
differences in between the photos in each group. It's easier than it sounds. As you may have guessed,
the photos are mostly of birds. The photos themselves are impressive.

You can choose from several timed versions of the game. Or, you can play without time restrictions. Good luck! EAGLE EYES?

"THE GREAT ESCAPE"

Guess nearly everyone has seen 'The Great Escape' at least once, but this is about how the tunnel
was built. It is awesome. The interactive map is also very creative, but in perspective not nearly as
much as the creativity and fortitude it took to engineer the escape itself. The animation alone is worth
looking at, but the story of the tunnel is amazing. This WW II tunnel escape story was the inspiration
for the Steve McQueen movie in the 60's. This is a fascinating look at a tunnel that was built in a
German POW camp. The tunnel allowed 76 Allied POWs to escape.

Check it out. Run your cursor over each number and it will tell you about it. ESCAPE

By Teresa Moore/The Ironton Tribune, Tuesday, April 1, 2008 5:09 PM EDT

It is a caregiver's worst nightmare: an elderly person, perhaps suffering from Alzheimer's or a disability,
wanders away, unable to find his or her way back home.Soon, the Lawrence County Sheriff's Office will join a
nationwide program aimed at finding such people. It is called Project Lifesaver. Participants receive a bracelet that
can transmit an electronic signal. Should the person with the bracelet wander away from home, trained personnel will
go to the area where the missing party was last seen and locate them with hand-held devices that can pick up the signal
from the bracelet.

Words and Terms Explained = BILL G.

  • = Q: Why do people clink their glasses before drinking a toast?
A: It used to be common for someone to try to kill an enemy by offering him a poisoned drink. To prove to a guest that a drink was safe, it became customary for a guest to pour a small amount of his drink into the glass of the host. Both men would drink it simultaneously. When a guest trusted his host, he would then just touch or clink the host's glass with his own.
  • = Q: Why are people in the public eye said to be "in the limelight"?
A: Invented in 1825, limelight was used in lighthouses and stage lighting by burning a cylinder of lime which produced a brilliant light. In the theatre, performers on stage "in the limelight" were seen by the audience to be the center of attention.
  • = Q: Why do ships and aircraft in trouble use "mayday"as their call for help?
A: This comes from the French word m'aidez -meaning "help me" -- and is pronounced "mayday,"
  • = Q: Why is someone who is feeling great "on cloud nine"?
A: Types of clouds are numbered according to their altitudes, with nine being the highest cloud. If someone is said to be on cloud nine that person is floating well above worldly cares.
  • = Q: Why are zero scores in tennis called "love"?
A: In France, where tennis first became popular, a round zero on a scoreboard looked like an egg and was called "l'oeuf," French for egg. When tennis was introduced in US, Americans pronounced it "love."
  • = Q: In golf, where did the term "Caddie" come from?
A: When Mary, later Queen of Scots, went to France as a young girl (for education & survival), Louis, King of France, learned that she loved the Scot game "golf." So he had the first golf course outside of Scotland built for her. To make sure she was properly chaperoned while she played, Louis hired cadets from a military school to accompany her. Mary liked this a lot, and when she returned to Scotland, she took the practice with her. In French, the word cadet is pronounced 'ca-day' and the Scots changed it into "caddie".

Sheriff to provide tracking bracelets = By BEVERLY CORBELL

The Daily Sentinel Friday, February 08, 2008

MONTROSE — When the parents of a mentally challenged Montrose woman discovered she was missing in May, they
went through days of agony before she was found safe. Their anxiety might have lasted only minutes if she had been
wearing a Project Lifesaver tracking bracelet.

Montrose County Sheriff Rick Dunlap recently purchased 10 of the bracelets, which will be provided free of charge to
people with Alzheimer’s, autism or other disabilities on a first-come, first-serve basis. Helen Bock, victim’s advocate for
the Sheriff’s Department, said the bracelets were paid for with a $10,000 grant from the Colorado Department of
Criminal Justice. Each bracelet costs about $300, Bock said. The grant also paid for two radio receivers and a tracking
antenna, which together cost about $6,000.

“Mesa County also has them, and our receivers will work with their equipment,” she said. “We’re the second county on
the Western Slope to get them.” Dunlap’s goal is to get 50 of the tracking bracelets, Bock said, and he is working with
Delta County so it can get grants to buy the same equipment. The bracelets work by transmitting a radio signal around
the clock, Bock said. People wearing them can’t take them off unless they cut through the plastic band, she said. “On the
ground, the receiver has a one-mile radius,” she said. “In the air, the range could be a three- to five-mile radius.”

The bracelets will be attached by Bock, she said, and caretakers will have a checklist for maintenance. “Once a month we
change the bands and change the batteries and note any problems,” she said. “We also make sure the caretaker is testing it every day.”

Project Lifesaver was developed in 1999 by the Chesapeake County, Va., Sheriff’s Department and has had a 100 percent success rate, according to its brochure.

HOUSEHOLD TIPS = BILL G.

  • = Balm for broken blisters ....To disinfect a broken blister, dab on a few drops of Listerine .... a powerful antiseptic.
  • = Heinz vinegar to heal bruises ... Soak a cotton ball in white vinegar and apply it to the bruise for 1 hour.
The vinegar reduces the blueness and speeds up the healing process.
  • = Kills fleas instantly .. Dawn dish washing liquid does the trick. Add a few drops to your dog's bath and shampoo
the animal thoroughly. Rinse well to avoid skin irritations. Goodbye fleas.
  • = Rainy day cure for dog odor ... Next time your dog comes in from the rain, simply wipe down the animal with Bounce or any
dryer sheet, instantly making your dog smell springtime fresh.
  • = Eliminate ear mites .... All it takes is a few drops of Wesson corn oil in your cat's ear. Massage it in, then clean
with a cotton ball. Repeat daily for 3 days. The oil soothes the cat's skin, smothers the mites, and accelerates
    healing.
  • =Quaker Oats for fast pain relief .....It's not for breakfast anymore! Mix 2 cups of Quaker Oats and 1 cup of water
in a bowl and warm in the microwave for 1 minute, cool slightly, and apply the mixture to your hands for
    soothing relief
    from arthritis pain.

I WONDER .... Jan B.

  • = Why do people pay to go up tall buildings and then put money in binoculars to look at things on the ground?
  • = Why do doctors leave the room while you change? They're going to see you naked anyway.
  • = Why is "bra" singular and "panties" plural ?
  • Why do toasters always have a setting that burns the toast to a horrible crisp, which no decent human being would eat?
  • = Can a hearse carrying a corpse drive in the carpool lane?

Officers from the Essex County OPP are proud to provide policing services to the communities of Kingsville, Lakeshore,
Pelee Island and Tecumseh.

To meet the many challenges we face in delivering policing excellence, we are committed to innovation and focus on
constant improvement. It is my hope that this web "forum" will represent one more tool in our arsenal as we move
forward.

This past year we made several changes to our service delivery, including the creation of a Street Crimes unit,
a dedicated Youth Crime unit and a significant expansion of our Major Crime unit.

Officers staff a dedicated traffic unit that has focused on enforcement based on statistical analysis.

As many have seen, our Community Services officers are in your schools and in your community.

I would like to close by reiterating the commitment of the Ontario Provincial Police to earn your trust every day as we
work together to maintain safe and secure communities.

MILTON , USA — Sheriff ’s deputies were quickly able to locate a missing elderly man suffering from Alzheimer’s this week
because of his participation in an electronic tracking program.

Donald Middaugh, 80, wandered away from his home Monday evening, but a Santa Rosa County sheriff ’s deputy located
him an hour later a few miles from his home.

Sheriff ’s deputy Roman Jackson was able to find Middaugh through the use of an electronic bracelet the man wears as
part of Project Lifesaver.

Middaugh was enrolled in Project Lifesaver after a similar incident happened last year.

For information on enrolling in the program, contact the Alzheimer’s Family Services at (850) 478-7790.

Good deed, USA = 12-31-07

Sunset Automotive and Boar's Head were corporate sponsors for the Project Lifesaver bracelets that were recently
purchased by the Sarasota Police Department. The bracelet can help police find people who suffer from some form of
dementia, including Alzheimer's patients who wander away from home.

The bracelets emit a traceable radio signal. The signal can be traced within a five-mile radius. Officers use a direction
wand or antenna fitted on a patrol car to find the signal, which gets louder the closer they get to the bracelet.

Boar's Head provided the funding to purchase the bracelets and the tracking equipment. Sunset Chevrolet donated a
new 2008 Chevrolet Tahoe, which will be driven to not only supply the bracelets to those in need, but also to go back
monthly and replace the batteries in the bracelets and to track someone who is lost.

  • = Coca-Cola cure for rust .... Forget those expensive rust removers. Just saturate an abrasive sponge with Coca
Cola and scrub the rust stain. The phosphoric acid in the coke is what gets the job done.
  • = Cleaning liquid that doubles as bug killer .... If menacing bees, wasps, hornets, or yellow jackets get in your home and you can't find the insecticide, try a spray of Formula 409 .. Insects drop to the ground instantly.
  • = Smart splinter remover ....just pour a drop of Elmer's Glue-All over the splinter, let dry, and peel the dried glue off
the skin. The splinter sticks to the dried glue.
  • = Hunt's tomato paste boil cure ....cover the boil with Hunt's tomato paste as a compress. The acids from the
tomatoes soothe the pain and bring the boil to a head.

Major tax, social benefit changes coming in 2008

Ray Turchansky, CanWest News Service, Published Monday. December 24, 2007

= In addition to enjoying a reduction in the goods and services tax from six to five per cent on Jan.1, Canadians will see a number of tax and social benefit changes in 2008.

= The federal government has announced it will increase its various tax brackets and social benefit thresholds by 1.9%, indexed for inflation, according to the Consumer Price Index.

= Federally, the recent economic statement announced that the basic personal amount upon which you pay no federal tax has been increased to $9,000 retroactive to the beginning of 2007, an amount that will grow to $10,000 in 2009. At the same time, it was announced that the lowest tax bracket rate has been reduced from 15.5 to 15% as of 2007, however that also becomes the new rate for many federal tax credits.

= In the new year, the level at which the 22% tax bracket starts will increase from $37,178 to $37,885, while the 26% bracket that started at $74,357 now opens at $75,769, and the 29% bracket that began at $120,887 now commences at $123,184.

= The federal $5,177 age-amount credit for people age 65 and over increases to $5,276, but will start to be clawed back if a person's net income is more than $30,936 and will be lost completely if net income exceeds $66,794.

= Old Age Security benefits, eligible for people age 65 and residents of Canada for at least 10 years, will begin to be clawed back when net income exceeds $63,511 and will be totally repayable if income is more than $104,819.

= The goods and services tax credit maximums increase from $237 to $242 for an adult and from $125 to #127 for a child, but they start being phased out if net family income is more than $31,524.

= The Canada child tax benefit goes from a base benefit of $1,283 to$1,307, with phase-out beginning if net family income is greater than $37,885.

= Both the GST credit and Canada child tax benefit changes take effect July 1, 2008, based on income reported on 2007 tax returns.

= Federal tax credits will be applied against a spousal or eligible dependant amount of $9,600, minus the net income of the spouse or dependent, and against a disability amount maximum that's up from $6,890 to $7,021.

= People can claim credit on medical expenses above the lesser amount of either three per cent of their net income or $1,962, the latter ceiling being increased from $1,926.

++++ Canadians will see a number of other changes to their paycheques in 2008. ++++

= Canada Pension Plan premiums will be paid on an increase of maximum pensionable earnings from $43,700 to $44,900, with an exemption on the first $3,500.

= Maximum contributions rise from $1,989.90 to $2,049.30 for employers and employees, while for self-employed people the maximum grows from $3,979.80 to $4,098.60.

= Conversely, employment insurance premiums continue to drop. Instead of employers paying $2.51 per $100 and employees $1.80 per $100 on a maximum of $40,000 in insurable earnings, during 2008 the premiums will be $2.42 per $100 for employers and $1.73 per $100 for employees on a maximum of $41,100 in insurable earnings.

= The registered retirement savings plan contribution limit goes from $19,000 for 2007 to $20,000 for 2008. That means your 2008 RRSP contribution room will be 18 per cent of your 2007 earned income from employment, minus your pension adjustment, to a maximum of $20,000.

= If you are turning 69 or 70 during 2008, you do not yet have to convert an RRSP to an income stream; you may continue contributing to an RRSP if you have room, and you do not have to make minimum RRIF withdrawals.

= One more consideration is for parents to increase registered education savings plan contributions to $2,500 per child in 2007, because that's the amount the 20% Canada Education Savings Grant is now paid on.

TEMPLE TEXAS INCIDENT

Temple police are trying to raise money for a program that could save lives.

Money raised goes to Project Lifesaver that gives bracelets to people with mental disabilities so rescue personnel can find them if they wander off.

The program could have helped in the search for 70-year-old Mattie Shoaf, who had Alzheimer’s when she wandered away from her family last month and was found dead the next day.

Authorities have located a 63-year-old woman with Alzheimer’s who was missing from a residential care facility.

The woman, a Project Lifesaver client, was last seen at Indian River Road and Justis Street, said Amber Whittaker, spokeswoman for Project Lifesaver.

Project Lifesaver received a call about 5:45 a.m. today that the woman was missing from the facility, Whittaker said. She was found safe before noon.

Whittaker said that authorities weren't sure how long the woman had been missing before they received the report this morning. The woman was being returned home.

  • = Sore throat? Just mix 1/4 cup of vinegar with 1/4 cup of honey and take 1 tablespoon six times a day. The vinegar kills the bacteria.
  • = Cure urinary tract infections with Alka-Seltzer .. Just dissolve two tablets in a glass of water and drink it at the onset of the symptoms. Alka-Seltzer begins eliminating urinary tract infections almost instantly even though the product was never advertised for this use. ( Note : Alka-Seltzer Plus Cold Medicine is not the same..and contains aspirin, which can cause stomach bleeding if you have ulcers.)
  • = Honey remedy for skin blemishes .... Cover the blemish with a dab of honey and place a Band-Aid over it. Honey kills the bacteria, keeps the skin sterile, and speeds healing. Works overnight.
  • = Listerine - therapy for toenail fungus .... Get rid of unsightly toenail fungus by soaking your toes in Listerine mouthwash. The powerful antiseptic leaves your toenails looking healthy again.
  • = Easy eyeglass protection .... To prevent the screws in eyeglasses from loosening, apply a small drop of Maybelline Crystal Clear nail polish to the threads of the screws before tightening them.

What is Project Lifesaver?

Project Lifesaver uses radio technology with rescue teams from local law enforcement to build an effective rescue system.
Project Lifesaver also equips and trains law enforcement agencies in an active response system to help with the increasing
problem of locating wandering patients before they fall victim to the elements, accidents or predators.

GOAL

Protecting the wandering, and bringing peace of mind to families, caregivers, and communities.

HOW DOES IT WORK?

A search is activated when caregivers call 911 to notify that their loved one is missing. A specially trained search and rescue
team responds to the wanderer’s area. They start searching with a mobile locator tracking system. The signal is tracked on
the ground or in a few cases in the air over several miles. Search times have been reduced from hours and days to minutes.

Example = December 2007

Sheriff’s deputies were quickly able to locate a missing elderly man suffering from Alzheimer’s this week because of his
participation in an electronic tracking program. The man, 80, wandered from his home Monday evening, but a Santa Rosa
County sheriff’s deputy located him an hour later a few miles from his home. The Sheriff’s deputy was able to find the Man
through the use of an electronic bracelet the man wears as part of Project Lifesaver. The man was enrolled in Project Lifesaver
after a similar incident happened last year.

USEFUL INFORMATION

  • Polish Jewelry = Drop two Alka Seltzer tablets into a glass of water and immerse the jewelry for two minutes.
  • Clean a thermos bottle = Fill the bottle with water, drop in four Alka Seltzer tablets, and let soak for an hour (or longer, if necessary).
  • Unclog a drain = Clear the sink drain by dropping three Alka Seltzer tablets down the drain followed by a cup of Heinz White Vinegar.
Wait a few minutes and then run the hot water.
  • Burn your fingers? = Pour soy sauce over it and the burning sensation will immediately stop (and you have a good chance
of not blistering, too.) I don't know why, but it just works.

HOUSEHOLD TIPS = Bill G.

  • A solution of 2/3 water and 1/3 white vinegar on your kitchen counters and floors will get rid of ants.
  • Did You Know That drinking two glasses of Gatorade can relieve headache pain almost immediately --without the unpleasant
side effects caused by traditional "pain relievers."
  • Did you know that Colgate toothpaste makes an excellent salve for burns
  • Before you head to the drugstore for a high-priced inhaler filled with mysterious chemicals, try chewing on a couple of curiously
strong Altoids peppermints. They'll clear up your stuffed nose.
  • Achy muscles from a bout of the flu? Mix 1 Tablespoon of horseradish in 1 cup of olive oil. Let the mixture sit for 30 minutes,
then apply it as a massage oil, for instant relief for aching muscles.
